Are you a highly skilled safety professional with extensive experience in workplace health and safety and assurance oversight? A state government agency in Queensland is seeking a Principal WHS and Safety Advisor to provide strategic and field-based leadership across a major rail infrastructure program.
Role Details:

- Location: Beerburrum, Sunshine Coast
- Rate: $77.02 p/h + superannuation
About the Role:
Reporting to the Delivery Director, the Principal WHS and Safety Advisor will deliver both strategic and operational leadership across the Rail Upgrade Project. The role combines policy, governance, and assurance responsibilities with a visible on-site presence to ensure WHS and safety best practice is embedded across project delivery. The position will engage with contractors, Queensland Rail, and project teams to oversee safety performance and deliver sustainable outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide visible safety leadership onsite through inspections, site walks, and workforce engagement.
- Engage with contractors and Queensland Rail representatives to ensure safe systems of work are implemented and followed.
- Lead or support incident investigations, ensuring corrective actions and lessons learned are effectively applied.
- Facilitate risk assessments, toolbox talks, and hazard identification processes in the field.
- Conduct audits, inspections, and verification activities across both field and management systems.
- Deliver high-quality assurance reporting, translating field findings into governance updates.
- Contribute to continuous improvement through the development of policies, systems, and safety initiatives.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including regulators and industry partners.
- Undertake additional duties as directed to support safe and effective project delivery.

Mandatory Requirements:
- Tertiary qualifications in Health and Safety, Business, or a related discipline.
- Strong knowledge of WHS legislation, Codes of Practice, and AS/ISO standards.
- Demonstrated leadership experience in WHS and safety on large-scale infrastructure projects.
- Proven ability in contractor oversight, safety governance, and assurance reporting.
- High-level written and verbal communication skills with the ability to influence across all levels.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and digital safety reporting systems.
- Full Australian working rights.
- Own car and licence, with willingness to travel to project sites as required.
Desirable Requirements:
- Experience engaging with regulators such as ONRSR and OFSC.
- Internal Auditor qualification.
- ICAM Lead Investigator accreditation.
