Promoting Awareness for Men’s Health Week

In Australia, Men’s Health Week provides a platform for challenging and debating key issues in men’s health and for raising the profile of men. Initially conceived by the US Congress in 1994, the week’s purpose was to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems among men. Since its inception, Men’s Health Week continues to promote the engagement of men with the challenges of men’s health, with a dose of wellness on the side.

While men’s life expectancy has increased significantly since the Middle Ages, a boy born in Australia in 2010 has a life expectancy of 78.0 years, while a baby girl born at the same time could expect to live to 82.3 years old. That’s why we’re shining a light on Men’s Health Week – June 15th to 21st.

What is being done?

As mentioned, Men’s Health Week provides a platform to challenge and debate key issues in men’s health. It also helps to raise awareness amongst men that they aren’t as bulletproof as they’d like to think. This week aims to break down the stigma that is often associated with men’s health issues, and to encourage them to look after their health and wellness, after all it isn’t “weak to speak”.

There are a range of online-events across the nation aiming to support and raise awareness for Men’s Health Week. You can find a comprehensive and up-to-date list of events that are going on in your state here.
