The Fundamentals of Psychosocial Safety for Leaders: Insights from HOBAN’s Workforce Insights Session

At HOBAN Recruitment, we know that safe, supportive workplaces start with effective leadership. Our latest Workforce Insights Session – The Fundamentals of Psychosocial Safety for Leaders brought together senior leaders to explore how organisations can meet compliance requirements while building stronger workplace cultures.

The session was hosted by HOBAN CEO Alison Watts and featured Debra Burlington, Practice Lead – Leadership & Culture at Risk Strategies. Debra shared practical strategies for leaders to better understand psychosocial safety and apply it in ways that improve wellbeing and performance across their teams.

Why Psychosocial Safety Matters

Psychosocial safety is now a central part of workplace health and safety in Australia. Leaders are expected not only to manage risks but to create an environment where employees feel safe, supported and engaged.

Strong leadership in this area helps organisations:

  • Build trust and resilience within teams
  • Reduce risks of stress and burnout
  • Improve employee retention
  • Create conditions for better performance and innovation

What Leaders Learned

Across two hours of interactive discussion, participants explored:

  • The fundamentals of psychosocial safety and why it matters
  • The role leaders play in shaping a safe workplace culture
  • How to identify and assess potential hazards
  • Strategies to manage risks effectively
  • Ways to recognise and support vulnerable employees
  • The shared responsibility of leaders and teams in building safe workplaces

From Compliance to Culture

A key theme was the opportunity for leaders to go beyond compliance. By embedding psychosocial safety into everyday leadership, organisations can create workplaces where people feel comfortable to contribute, share ideas and work at their best.

HOBAN’s Commitment

Through our Workforce Insights program, HOBAN brings together experts and organisations to share knowledge that makes a real difference. We are committed to helping Australian businesses understand changing workplace requirements and create environments where employees thrive.

This is one of many sessions we’ll be running throughout the year on important workforce topics.
